After Murders, Investment Banks Suspend Funds for Agua Zarca Dam

A second indigenous-rights activist who opposed a major dam project has been murdered in Honduras. Nelson Garcia was shot point blank by unidentified gunmen at his home on Tuesday, two weeks after the similar murder of Berta Caceres. They were both involved in advocating for the rights of Lenca people, many of whom were being kicked off their land to make room for the Agua Zarca Dam project.
Now, two large European development banks, the Dutch FMO and Finnish Finnfund, announced yesterday that they are suspending their involvement in the dam project. This comes despite FMO’s involvement in other controversial Latin American dam projects that have led to the murder of protesters, often indigenous people fighting displacement. 4:25 minutes (4.04 MB)
